A perfect blend of coffee, milk, and spices.

Coffee grog is a versatile recipe, and there are many substitutions and variations you can apply to make it your own.

Firstly, the lemon peel can be substituted with orange peel for a sweeter flavor, or you can omit it altogether if you prefer. As for spices, you can use pumpkin spice instead of cinnamon and nutmeg or add cardamom for a more floral note.

For a healthier version, you can replace butter with coconut oil, and brown sugar with maple syrup or honey. If you want to reduce calories, use light cream instead of heavy cream.

If you’re keen on recreating the alcoholic version of this drink, simply add 1-2 ounces of dark rum, Irish whiskey preferably Clontarf or your preferred hard liquor to your hot coffee grog right before serving.

In an effort to experiment with cold drizzle variations of coffee grog for hot summer afternoons, add 4 tablespoons of cold brew concentrate per serving along with brown sugar syrup and butter mixture melted to perfection. You may even substitute black tea for coffee, as trader vic’s recipe recommends.

To have coffee grog on-the-go blended with Irish cream, simply toss the hot coffee grog into a blender along with some blended Irish whiskey cubed ice.

Lastly, if you wish to have a non-alcoholic version of this drink for your next tiki themed party, skip adding any hard liquor while still following the rest of the recipe steps.

Remember that substitutions may alter the flavor profile of your coffee grog so feel free to play around until you find what works best for you!

A cup of coffee grog is best enjoyed after a hearty meal, relaxing in a comfortable chair. The warm spices and rich flavors of this non-alcoholic drink makes it perfect for dessert or for any time a little pick-me-up is needed.

Pair your coffee grog with some buttery biscuits or a slice of pound cake to enhance its cozy and comforting feel. Sipping on it alongside crunchy nuts or candied fruits can also make for a great nibble that can accent the sweet and slightly tangy notes of this beverage.

As for serving, you can add some pizzazz to your coffee grog by sprinkling some cinnamon on top, adding whipped cream or even a dash of ground nutmeg to suit your personal taste. It can be served hot or cold – swap regular coffee with cold brew for an icy twist that is perfect for summer days.

This non-alcoholic version of coffee grog provides an ideal sipper for everyone, but if you are feeling adventurous and want to experiment with alcoholic versions, you can add dark rum like Trader Vic’s Coffee Grog. The key to keep in mind when pairing the alcoholic option is to avoid foods that might clash with rum’s bold flavor. Instead you may want to consider trying out chocolates(not too sweet), spicy snacks or even fried seafood dishes which pair well with the vibrant tones of rum. Either way, often people rave about how great the pairing capabilities of coffee grog are and relish the versatility it offers.
