Ingredients for Dad’s Irish Coffee Recipe

  • Freshly brewed coffee (6 oz or 1 cup)
  • Irish whiskey (2 oz or 1 1/2 shot)
  • Brown sugar (1 teaspoon)
  • Whipped cream
    • Heavy cream (3 tbsp)
    • Sugar (1 teaspoon)
  • Creme de Cacao (1/2 ounce)

This Irish Coffee recipe features only four ingredients. To get the traditional taste of the original Buena Vista Irish coffee, we use one part of Jameson Irish Whiskey and two parts freshly brewed coffee. Giving it an extra perfect touch, add a dollop of slightly sweetened whipped cream on top of a mixture of brown sugar, whiskey, coffee, and creme de cacao.

Now that we know the ingredients, it’s time to learn how to make Dad’s Irish Coffee. Don’t worry; It’s easy to make this delicious and wine-like cocktail with only four basic ingredients.

Step 1: Brew the Coffee

The first step is to brew a strong cup of coffee. I recommend two teaspoons of brown sugar per cup of hot coffee to ensure it has a slightly sweet flavor. If you prefer a more robust and bitter flavor, you may skip adding sugar.

Step 2: Pour the Whiskey

In an Irish Coffee glass, pour 1-2 oz of irish whiskey, depending on your preferences. Dad prefers Jameson Irish whiskey in his recipe, but feel free to use any brand you like.

Step 3: Add the Coffee

Once brewed, add 6 oz of hot coffee to the whiskey.

Step 4: Add Toppings

Gently mix your drink together until everything combines, then add a dollop of whipped cream on top. You can whip up some heavy cream yourself or opt for the store-bought kind.

Non-Dairy Topping:

If you’re vegan or lactose intolerant, you may substitute the whipped cream with non-dairy whipped topping.

Step 5: Optional – Grate Some Chocolate

You can also spice up your drink presentation by adding some grated chocolate on top of your whipped cream.

Don’t be afraid to experiment! Personalizing your Irish Coffee by adding your own spin is part of its charm.

Making Dad’s Irish Coffee Recipe is a simple and easy process, but sometimes you may not have all the necessary ingredients at hand. Fear not! There are plenty of substitutions and variations you can make to customize your coffee according to your preferences!

If you want to try a non-alcoholic version of this drink, you can simply omit the Irish whiskey and replace it with Baileys Irish Cream. You can even use low-carb whipped cream if you’re keeping an eye on your sugar intake!

For a stronger drink, you can add an extra shot of Irish whiskey or even swap it out for Jameson Irish Whiskey, which has a more robust flavor profile that pairs well with coffee.

If you love chocolate, consider adding 1-2 teaspoons of Creme de Cacao to your drink for a richer, chocolaty taste. You can also experiment with flavored syrups like vanilla or hazelnut for an added twist to your cup of Joe.

If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try putting a spin on this classic recipe by making an iced version? Simply brew some black coffee and let it cool. Mix it with the whiskey and sugar in a shaker and pour it over ice. Don’t forget to garnish with whipped cream and enjoy!

The possibilities are endless when it comes to making variations of Dad’s Irish Coffee Recipe. So go ahead, be creative, and make the perfect cup of coffee that suits your taste buds.

The Dad’s Irish Coffee Recipe is a delicious beverage that can be enjoyed at any time of the day, but it’s especially perfect for a cozy night by the fireplace. This drink pairs well with desserts like chocolate cake, brownies, or cheesecake. The sweetness of desserts complements the bitterness of coffee and the warmth of whiskey, creating a delightful flavor combination.

Apart from desserts, you can also have this Irish coffee with savory snacks like cheese and crackers or even breakfast foods like pancakes and waffles. The strong flavors in the coffee complement the richness of foods such as bacon or roasted ham. However, it is recommended to have this drink in moderation as the combination of coffee and whisky may be too strong for some palates.

When serving this Irish coffee recipe, it is best to use clear glass mugs to show off the contrasting layers of cream and coffee. Present it with whipped cream and a light dusting of cocoa powder on top for an indulgent finishing touch.

Overall, Dad’s Irish Coffee Recipe is versatile in terms of pairing options and makes for a wonderful drink to share with family and friends over dessert or after dinner. So go ahead and try making this delicious drink – you won’t be disappointed!

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

With its rich flavor and smooth texture, Dad's Irish Coffee can easily become your new favorite drink.

One of the advantages of Dad’s Irish Coffee recipe is the possibility of making a larger batch ahead of time, ideal for entertaining or for those busy mornings. When making this recipe a day or two before serving, let it come to room temperature before storing it in sealed containers in the refrigerator. This will help preserve the flavor and aroma.

When only storing small amounts of leftovers, you can store it in an airtight container and keep it in the fridge for up to three days. However, I recommend reheating on low heat only what you are going to drink at that moment and discarding any remaining coffee mixture.

To reheat leftovers or pre-made batch, add the desired amount to a small pot over low heat until it starts bubbling. Be vigilant and stir occasionally to ensure that it doesn’t boil over. Once heated through, simply pour it into your favorite coffee mug and top with whipped cream or cream. You’ll notice that even after reheating, the coffee still has its rich flavors and aromas, no one will ever know it was made ahead!

Just keep in mind that freshly brewed coffee tastes best when served immediately. So, while you can still make Irish coffee with leftover brewed coffee, nothing beats freshly brewed espresso-like coffee for this recipe. And remember drink responsibly and enjoy!

Tips for Perfect Results

To make the perfect Irish coffee, I have some tips to share with you. These are some secrets that I have learned from my years of experience as a barista and making my dad’s signature Irish coffee recipe.

Firstly, your coffee must be hot and freshly brewed. When coffee is exposed to air, it creates a bitter taste, so it’s important to have freshly brewed coffee for your drink. Be sure not to let your coffee sit too long before adding it to your mix.

Secondly, use real whipped cream instead of non-dairy whipped topping. The butterfat in heavy cream enhances the beverage by eliminating harshness and adding rich texture, whereas non-dairy whipped toppings leave a chemical aftertaste which can ruin the drink’s taste and texture.

Next, make sure to use the correct measurements of ingredients. Use one shot (1 1/2 oz) of Irish whiskey, two teaspoons of brown sugar, and six ounces of hot brewed coffee for authentic taste. This will give you the perfect balance of sweet and bitter flavors.

If you want to make variations with this recipe or make it low-carb, Bailey’s Irish cream can be used instead of whiskey. Just remember that while using the variation ingredient in place of whiskey may change the drink’s composition slightly but not entirely that different from its original form.

Finally, garnish the drink with freshly grated nutmeg or cinnamon powder for added flavors based on preference.

By following these simple tips, you can turn an ordinary coffee into an exceptional Irish coffee that’ll wake your dad up from his slumber any time!

Bottom Line

In conclusion, Dad’s Irish Coffee Recipe is an easy and delicious way to start your day or end a long night. The combination of freshly brewed coffee, Irish whiskey, and whipped cream is sure to wake you up and put a smile on your face. Plus, with only four ingredients, it’s an affordable and simple recipe for any coffee lover to make.

This is a recipe my Dad invented that has brought my family many a pleasant winter evening. I have tried many different Irish coffees, this is by far the best ever. If you have a problem with caffeine you can substitute decaf coffee; or we have used 1/2 decaf and 1/2 regular grounds when making the coffee.
