Now that you know why this Jam Swirl Coffee Cake Recipe is so special, let’s dive into the how-to. Follow these step-by-step instructions to make a delicious cake that will please everyone at your table.

Preparation

First, you need to preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray. Then, mix the dry ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Whisk together 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1 tsp of nutmeg, 1/2 tsp of baking soda, 2 tsp of baking powder and 1/4 tsp of salt.

In another bowl, beat together 3/4 cups of granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of unsalted butter until smooth and fluffy.

Batter Preparation

Secondly, add in two large eggs one by one, beating well after each addition. Add half of the flour mixture to the wet mixture and mix well, then add 1/2 cup buttermilk and mix again. Finally, stir in the remaining flour mixture.

Create Jam Swirls

Next is the fun part: creating the jam swirls! Spread half of the cake batter evenly into your prepared pan. Drop spoonfuls (about 1/3 cup) of raspberry jam on top, and use a knife or skewer to gently swirl the jam throughout the batter. Repeat with another layer of cake batter followed by another layer (about 1/3 cup) of raspberry jam swirled throughout.

Add Streusel Topping

For added crunch and sweetness, create the streusel topping for which you will need:

  • 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter

Mix together all ingredients in a small bowl until it resembles coarse sand. Sprinkle the streusel mixture evenly over the top of the cake batter.

Bake

Bake the cake in the oven for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Once done, remove from the heat, and let it cool before slicing into squares and serving.

Enjoy your homemade Jam Swirl Coffee Cake with a nice cup of coffee or tea. It will keep fresh for up to three days if stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

The perfect blend of sweet and rich
The perfect blend of sweet and rich

Everyone loves a good coffee cake, and this jam swirl coffee cake recipe is no exception. But what if you’re looking to switch up the recipe a bit? Luckily, there are some substitutions and variations you can try!

1. Gluten-Free: To make this recipe gluten-free, simply substitute the all-purpose flour for a gluten-free flour blend. One of my favorites is the King Arthur Flour Gluten-Free Measure for Measure Flour. Keep in mind that the texture of the cake may be slightly different than the original recipe.

2. Jam Flavor: While this recipe calls for raspberry jam, you can easily swap it out for your favorite jam flavor. Try blackberry, strawberry, or even guava jam to mix things up.

3. Streusel Topping: The streusel topping in this recipe is sweet and crumbly. If you prefer a different type of topping or want to switch it up, you can try adding chopped nuts or dried fruit to the crumb mixture.

4. Bundt Cake: If you want to make this recipe into a bundt cake, simply double the ingredients and bake in a greased 10-12 cup bundt pan for 50-60 minutes.

5. Cream Cheese Filling: For an extra indulgent twist, try adding a cream cheese filling to your jam swirled coffee cake! Mix together 8 ounces of softened cream cheese, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and 1 egg until smooth. Spoon half of the cake batter into your prepared pan, add dollops of the cream cheese mixture on top (use about half), then add the remaining batter on top.

No matter which substitutions or variations you choose to try, this jam swirl coffee cake recipe is sure to be a hit!

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

A sweet treat that's worth the calories

The Jam Swirl Coffee Cake recipe is perfect for make-ahead preparation. Once baked and cooled, the cake can be wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator for up to three days. If you plan on storing it longer, you can freeze the cake for up to two months. Just be sure to tightly wrap it in plastic wrap followed by aluminum foil before placing it in the freezer.

When you’re ready to serve, thaw the cake overnight in the refrigerator if it was frozen. Once thawed or if it was refrigerated, cut into slices, and warm each slice in the microwave for 20-30 seconds or reheat it in the oven at 350°F for 5-8 minutes or until warmed through.

If you want to reheat the entire cake, preheat your oven to 350°F and cover the cake with aluminum foil. Heat it for 20-25 minutes or until completely heated through.

It’s important to note that reheating this cake in a microwave may make it slightly soggy due to its moist texture. Thus, use an oven if you wish your coffee cake to retain its original texture while reheating.

As a barista, I think the secret to making a perfect Jam Swirl Coffee Cake Recipe is using fresh and good quality ingredients. Here are some tips that will help you make a delicious and impressive cake every time!

– Make sure your ingredients are at room temperature: The butter, eggs, and buttermilk should be at room temperature before mixing in the batter. This helps to create a uniform mixture and leads to a better texture.

– Sift the flour: Sifting helps the flour to aerate and blend more evenly with the other dry ingredients. Use a sieve or a sifter for this step.

– Avoid over-mixing: Over-mixing the batter will result in a dense and tough cake. Mix until just combined, making sure not to overwork the dough.

– Swirling the jam: Take care when swirling the jam to achieve an even distribution throughout the batter. Use a knife or spatula to create a marble effect, being careful not to mix it in too much.

– Adding spices: Adding nutmeg and cinnamon will enhance the flavors of your coffee cake while adding richness and depth.

– Topping with streusel: The crumb topping adds texture and flavor to your cake. Make sure you sprinkle it evenly over the top of your cake before baking.

– Cooling the cake: Letting the cake cool completely before cutting ensures that it maintains its shape and texture. It also helps to prevent it from crumbling or falling apart in slices.

– Experiment with fillings: Don’t be afraid to try different jams or combinations of jams like raspberry and blueberry swirl coffee or cherry swirl coffee which can add different flavors and colors. You can also try using hazelnut spread or guava jam for an exotic twist on this recipe.

– Have fun with presentation: You can dress up your coffee cake by dusting it with powdered sugar, garnishing with fresh fruits or nuts, or drizzling it with a glaze made of powdered sugar and milk.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to make a perfect Jam Swirl Coffee Cake Recipe that your friends and family will simply adore.
