The Recipe How-To

Step 1: Combine the Spices and Coffee

To prepare Moroccan Daydream Coffee, you will need to start with a spice mix that is commonly used in Morocco called ras el hanout. For this recipe, you will need only 1 tablespoon of the aromatic spice blend.

In a saucepan, mix 1 tablespoon of the ras el hanout spice mix with ground coffee (dark roasted coffee freshly ground from whole bean is highly recommended). The spices in the ras el hanout blend perfectly with coffee with its flavors and aroma.

Step 2: Add Sugar

Add sugar (1-2 teaspoons) if you prefer your coffee sweet to balance out the bitterness of the coffee.

Step 3: Add Water

Then, add boiling water to the saucepan’s mixture of spices and coffee until it fills a brewing pot or a carafe.

Step 4: Brew and Steep

Brew the mixture on stove top using medium heat. Simmer for several minutes (up to 5 -7 minutes) for all the flavors to combine perfectly.

After that, steep for an additional minute off heat which also enhances its flavor. The result would highlight both coffee and the spices, creating a “moroccan daydream” experience.

And voila! You now have a delicious cup of Moroccan Daydream Coffee that will transport you to an exotic Moroccan oasis in the comfort of your living room!

Do you love the sound of Moroccan Daydream Coffee, but you’re missing an ingredient, or want to make some creative variations? No worries, I got you covered!

Firstly, if you don’t have Ras El Hanout spice mix, you can make a simpler substitute. Mix ½ teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger, and paprika with a pinch of cumin and black pepper.

Secondly, if you prefer a sweeter coffee, feel free to add up to two teaspoons of sugar or use your favorite sweetener instead.

For some extra spice or flavor, try adding a dash of orange blossom water, Moroccan rose water, or even some mint tea to your cup of coffee.

Additionally, you could customize your brew by changing the roast level of your coffee beans. While dark roasted coffee goes well with the warm flavors in this recipe, you can experiment with medium or light roasts for a different taste.

Finally, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to go beyond Moroccan Daydream Coffee, try spicing up your regular coffee with some Moroccan-inspired combinations. An easy way to do so is to mix ½ teaspoon each of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, clove, and black pepper into your coffee grounds. Or get inspired by the bustling streets of Istanbul and enjoy a cup of Turkish coffee with a sprinkle of cardamom!

Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

If you want to make your Moroccan Daydream Coffee in advance, you can prepare the coffee and refrigerate it overnight. When serving, heat up the coffee and add the spices right before mixing in the Orange Blossom water. This way, you can make multiple servings ahead of time without worrying about the coffee going stale or losing flavor.

Storing left-over Moroccan Daydream Coffee is easy because it is as good chilled as it is hot. However, if you plan to store it for later use, keep it in an airtight container or bottle in the fridge for up to 2 days. Give it a good shake before enjoying it cold or reheat it directly on the stovetop or microwave until hot.

Reheating Moroccan Daydream Coffee might decrease its aroma and flavor, but there are ways to restore them. If you have chilled leftover coffee stored in a bottle or container, pour it into a saucepan and heat over medium heat until steam rises from the surface. Just be careful not to boil the coffee as excessive heat might cause some flavor loss.

Alternatively, you can microwave your stored Moroccan Daydream Coffee by pouring it into a microwave-safe cup or mug and heating up in 30-second intervals until warm. Stir well and enjoy!

1. Use Freshly Roasted and Ground Coffee Beans

For the best taste, use dark roasted coffee beans that have been freshly ground. This will give your coffee a bold flavor and aroma. You can also experiment with different blends to see which one works best for your taste.

2. Toast the Spices

Before making the Ras El Hanout spice mix, toast the individual spices in a skillet over low heat until they release their fragrance. This adds a deeper flavor profile to the coffee.

3. Use Boiling Water

Make sure you use boiling water when brewing the coffee to extract all the flavors from the beans and spices.

4. Add Sugar According to Your Taste

Add sugar to your coffee according to your preference. If you prefer a sweeter taste, use more sugar, but if you want to keep it on the less sweet side, reduce the amount of sugar accordingly.

5. Experiment with Orange Blossom Water

Orange blossom water is commonly used in Moroccan cuisine and gives its dishes a unique flavor. Adding this ingredient to your coffee may be a little unconventional, but it might just be what sets your cup of Moroccan Daydream Coffee apart from others.
