The Recipe How-To

Before starting to make this amazing recipe, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).

Step 1: Preparing the Cake

In a large bowl, cream together 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter and 3/4 cup granulated sugar until fluffy and light.

Then, add in 2 large eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

In another bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, and a pinch of salt. Using a whisk or a fork, mix them well.

Add in the dry ingredients into the wet mixture in batches of three parts, alternating with the addition of 1 cup sour cream. Mix gently until fully combined.

Step 2: Adding Flavor

Mix in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and zest from one lemon into the batter.

Fold in 1 can of cherry pie filling or 2 cups of fresh cherries or frozen cherries that have been thawed and drained.

Step 3: Preparing Crumb Topping

Take another bowl and mix together 1/4 cup melted butter, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, and 1/2 cup all-purpose flour. Use your hands to create large crumbs.

Spread the crumb mixture evenly over the cake batter.

Step 4: Baking

Bake the coffee cake in the preheated oven for approximately 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 5: Serving

For best results, let cool to room temperature before serving. The cake is moist and tastes best within two days of baking. It does not require refrigeration but should be stored in an airtight container once cooled down.

Are you looking to mix things up a bit? The Sour Cream Cherry Coffee Cake Recipe is flexible and can easily be customized to suit your taste preferences. Here are some substitutions and variations that you might want to try out:

1. Lemon zest: Swap the vanilla extract for lemon zest to infuse a tangy citrus flavor into the cake. Use half a teaspoon of lemon zest in place of the vanilla extract.

2. Yogurt: Don’t have sour cream on hand? Use full-fat or Greek yogurt instead. Both are great substitutes for sour cream and will add a tangy flavor and moisture to the cake.

3. Butter: Unsalted butter can be replaced with salted butter or margarine, but it is best to reduce or eliminate the added salt in the recipe when doing so.

4. Flour: You can substitute one cup of all-purpose flour with a combination of almond flour, oat flour, and wheat flour for some added nutrition and a nuttier flavor.

5. Sour Cherry: If you don’t have fresh or frozen sour cherries on hand, you can use cherry pie filling instead. It will add sweetness and a different texture to the cake. You could also use fresh cherries, pitted and roughly chopped, as an alternative.

6. Crumb Topping: To give your cake a crumbly crunch, sprinkle some cinnamon coffee crumble mix over the top before baking.

So many options! But before making any changes, keep in mind that alterations to your recipe may effect the texture and consistency of the cake. However, with just a few adjustments, you can make this classic Sour Cream Cherry Coffee Cake Recipe totally unique and entirely your own!

Serving and Pairing

If you’re feeling adventurous, try experimenting with different fruit toppings. This cake recipe also works well with blueberries, raspberries, or apples instead of cherries. You could add other ingredients like greek yogurt, tart cherry or cheese cake to create unique recipes.

Tips for Perfect Results

Now that you have the recipe and ingredients at hand, let me give you some tips to ensure your Sour Cream Cherry Coffee Cake turns out perfectly.

1. Room Temperature Ingredients: Make sure all of your ingredients are at room temperature before you start baking. This is especially important for the eggs and butter, as they will mix together better when they are not at different temperatures.

2. Mix dry ingredients well: In a separate bowl, mix all your dry ingredients together (flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt) before adding to the wet ingredients. Mixing these dry ingredients first ensures that everything gets integrated evenly.

3. Greek Yogurt: This recipe calls for sour cream which can be substituted with fat-free or full-fat Greek yogurt as well. This will give the coffee cake moistness without thinning out the batter consistency.

4. Crumb Topping: If you like cake crumb toppings, then you can double the amount of crumbs listed in the recipe.

5. Frozen Cherries Substitution: Sour cherry coffee cake is special because of the tart flavor of fresh or frozen cherries. But if you cannot find them, then canned cherry pie filling is a good alternative that provides lots of flavor too.

6. Land O’Lakes unsalted butter: Always use high-quality butter that enhances the taste of your cake significantly; Land O’Lakes unsalted butter is one of my preferences.

7. Don’t Over-bake: Bake the Sour Cream Cherry Coffee Cake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 50-55 minutes, until golden brown on top and springs back when lightly pressed in the middle. Do not overbake because it may cause a dry cake outcome.

By following these tips, your Sour Cream Cherry Coffee Cake will surely come out delicious and moist. So go ahead and take a bite into this perfect combination of delicious sour cherries mixed with hints of rich vanilla and buttery cake.

FAQ

As an experienced barista, I know that every recipe has some frequently asked questions. For this sour cream cherry coffee cake recipe, it’s good to be prepared for some common queries that might come up as we bake together. Let’s start by checking out some of the most asked questions and their answers.

What does adding sour cream to a cake mix do?

Incorporating sour cream into your cake batter is an effective way to enhance the moistness of your cake without altering its consistency. The inclination of sour cream to provide moisture without causing the batter to become more liquid yields a cake with a delicate texture and a very refined crumb structure.

Does a coffee cake with sour cream need to be refrigerated?

If you plan on munching on Sour Cream Coffee Cake during the next 48 hours, you can stash it at room temperature in a sealed container, and it will keep its moisture. But, in case you want to keep it for a more extended period, it’s advisable to refrigerate it, thus avoiding the formation of mold.

Does sour cream change the flavor of a cake?

According to baking expert Samantha Seneviratne, the addition of a slightly sour taste in baked goods enhances their overall flavor. In addition, the presence of fat in the recipe helps retain moisture and produces a delectable richness that results in delicate and tender cakes.

What makes coffee cake different from cake?

What sets coffee cakes apart from other types of cakes is their unique streusel topping and the fact that they are not frosted. These cakes often have a layer of streusel swirled throughout, and may also contain a variety of other fillings such as nuts, fruit or chocolate. While they may have a simple glaze, this cake is all about the delicious flavor and texture, without the overwhelming sweetness of traditional frosting.
