Make-Ahead, Storing and Reheating

The aroma of freshly baked banana coffee cake is simply irresistible.
The aroma of freshly baked banana coffee cake is simply irresistible.

This banana coffee cake is a great recipe to make ahead for busy mornings or when entertaining guests. Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely before storing it. You can store it for up to three days at room temperature inside an airtight container or wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and freeze it for later use.

To reheat the frozen cake, you can thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and then warm it up in the oven at 350°F for about ten minutes. Alternatively, you can microwave individual portions for about twenty seconds or until heated through.

You can also make the crumb topping in advance and store it separately from the cake batter. The topping will last up to three days inside an airtight container in the refrigerator. If you’re planning on freezing the cake, wait until after baking to add the topping to prevent sogginess.

When storing the cake with the crumb topping, keep in mind that the topping will absorb moisture over time and may become less crispy. However, this won’t affect the taste of your yummy banana coffee cake.

Whether making ahead or storing leftover banana coffee cake, proper storage ensures that every bite remains moist and delicious until eaten.

Achieving the perfect texture and flavor in a coffee cake using freshly milled flour might seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are some tips that will help you succeed in making the best banana coffee cake using freshly milled flour.

1. Measure your ingredients accurately

Measuring your ingredients accurately is crucial in any recipe, but especially with baking. Using too much or too little of an ingredient can throw off the balance and ruin the texture or flavor of the cake. Make sure you use measuring cups and spoons instead of estimating or eyeballing the amounts.

2. Use room temperature ingredients

Using room temperature ingredients, especially butter and eggs, will result in a more even texture and better rise. If your ingredients are cold, take them out of the fridge a few hours before starting the recipe.

3. Don’t overmix

Mixing your batter too much can lead to a tough cake. Mix until the ingredients are just combined, and then stop. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps in the batter; they’ll work themselves out during baking.

4. Adjust your oven temperature

If you suspect that your oven isn’t calibrated correctly, get an inexpensive oven thermometer at your local kitchen store so you can adjust for accuracy. A correct oven temperature will ensure that your cake bakes evenly and comes out perfectly.

5. Let it cool

Once your coffee cake is done baking, resist the temptation to dig in right away! Let it cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing into it. This allows the flavors to meld together and ensures that the texture sets properly.

Using these tips will help you achieve bakery-quality results with your banana coffee cake using freshly milled flour. Experiment until you find what works best for you and don’t forget to have fun!

As with any recipe, there may be some questions that arise during the baking process. To help ensure that your banana coffee cake using freshly milled flour turns out perfectly, I have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and their answers. Whether you’re an experienced baker or new to the kitchen, these tips and tricks will help you bake a delicious cake every time.

How do I substitute freshly milled flour for all purpose?

To adjust the recipe for freshly milled soft wheat flour, you’ll need to add an extra ¼ cup for every 1 cup of flour. For instance, if the recipe requires 1 cup of all-purpose or pastry flour, you must use 1 ¼ cups of freshly milled flour. Similarly, for 2 cups of flour, you’ll need to use 2 ½ cups of freshly milled flour instead.

Why can’t you bake with newly milled flour?

Using freshly milled flour in bread making can cause the dough to overproof. This is because the flour is whole grain, which means that 100% of the grain berry is used in the dough mix without first being sifted. Additionally, higher percentages of whole grain in the flour can lead to increased activity during fermentation.

Does fresh milled flour need more water?

When baking with freshly milled flours, experienced bakers will likely notice a notable contrast to using white flours. The dough requires more liquid as it is thirstier, soaking up a considerable amount of water compared to a dough made with standard flour.

What is the purpose of baking powder in banana bread?

You’ll find both baking soda and an acidic dry ingredient in baking powder. Its acidic nature allows it to create a leavening effect which can assist the remaining batter. Unlike other baking methods, baking powder doesn’t rely on acidic ingredients within the batter.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, this banana coffee cake recipe using freshly milled flour is a must-try for all coffee and banana lovers out there. With its moist and fluffy texture, nutty flavor, and delicious aroma, this cake is sure to become a favorite in your household.
